Today, we realize that physical appearance is more important than in the 20's. Today, we haven't got the same definition of beauty as in the 20's.
Beauty is so important, a "Miss France" competition was created in 1910.
In the 20's, a pretty woman had to have some forms, whereas today models are very thin. Thus, beauty always worried more or less the human: 77 000 years ago, humans were already worried by beauty; even the man of Neandertal was looking for beauty.
The beauty's search at the human, isn't recent, that's why l'Oreal Foundation decided to publish an enormous encyclopedia called"100 000 years of beauty". Then, some others writers decided to publish some beauty's books. Thus, in the course of years, beauty is more and more important for human (above all for woman who use a lot of cosmetics) but beauty's meaning change in the course of generations.

Sandy Skoglund:Radioactive Cats (1980)
1) Words/ideas/feelings that come to mind...
Strange animals, old people, uglyness, old furniture
2) This photo is part of a series called "Family Portraits"...
What kind of is it?!(it's a photographic portrait, but it's also...)?
This photographic portrait looks like a painting.
3) What does it show (describe the various elements, the situation, the atmosphere, etc.)?
It shows some strange, ugly and green cats. It's a morbide atmosphere because there aren't no colours juxt two cold colours which are green and black.I suppose the scene takes place in a kitchen.
4) What are the themes?(ugliness...)
The themes are uglyness and old age.
5) What is the "message" (if any)?
Maybe the illustrator wants to show us radioactivity's danger.
6)What, based on this example, is the purpose of (this work of)"art"?
